The Mothers Union in Langley
The Mothers Union is a world-wide Anglican organisation whose Purpose is to be concerned with all aspects of Christian family life. The Langley Marish Branch of the Mothers Union is in the Burnham & Slough Deanery in the Diocese of Oxford. See below for directions if you'd like to visit us.

Membership of the Mothers Union is open to all (both men and women) who have been baptised in the name of the Trinity and who support the Aim and Objects. This includes people of any age and status - young, middle aged or elderly; single, married, widowed or divorced.

You do not need to be able to attend every meeting. Your membership means that you support a particular way of life and you become part of the world-wide fellowship. Your subscription helps to support the work of the Mothers Union throughout the world.

The Mothers' Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, an Englishwoman. When her first child was born, she was overwhelmed by what she saw as the awesome responsibility of parents, not only in caring for their children's physical well-being, but also for their spiritual nurture and growth.

The Aim of the Mother's Union is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life. In order to carry this out there are five Objects:

. . . 1 . . . To uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding.

. . . 2 . . . To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.

. . . 3 . . . To maintain a world-wide fellowship of Christians, united in prayer, worship and service.

. . . 4 . . . To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.

. . . 5 . . . To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

What does the Mothers' Union do?

It is involved with all kinds of activities within the church and the community.

Meetings of the Langley Marish Branch of the Mothers Union  are usually held on the third Thursday of the month at Seymour House, St Mary's Road, Langley at 8.00 pm. A programme of  this year's meetings is below...

Worship plays an important part. Members are regularly involved in the Sunday  Communion Service at one of our three churches- reading the lesson, leading the prayers, acting as sidesmen and serving coffee after the Service. There is also a prayer group which meets every month to pray not only for the Mothers Union and its concerns, but for any prayer needs that have been identified to members of the group. Members world-wide are remembered through the daily wave of prayer.

Publications The Mothers Union publishes a wide range of books and leaflets on family life and other Christian themes as well as books of prayers. There are also greetings cards for different occasions.

Media Members are asked to be aware of the material that reaches us through the media. Members are encouraged to pass on their views on what they have seen, heard or read (positive as well as negative).

World-wide Members in this country support the work of the Mothers Union overseas by contributing to the financing of Mothers Union workers in other countries. There are about 1,000,000 Mothers Union members in 59 countries world-wide.

The Indoor Members Prayer Circle is for members who can not attend branch meetings but who want to be part of the membership.

Young Families are especially important and Parent & Toddler Groups, Pram Services and activities such as the annual Teddy Bears' Picnic are organised in many areas.

Social concern is a key part of the Mothers' Union . The work includes providing holidays for needy families and care for people in the community.
