St Francis of Assisi
As seen from the London Road

St Francis of Assisi Church was built in 1961 as a mission church to the new London estate being built by the Greater London Council and to serve the Castleview estate. Only the church hall was ever completed; this now serves as a multi purpose building which is used to serve the local community in practical ways as well as for their spiritual needs

The hall is a multi-purpose area used by all the groups, with the chairs (now replaced by more comfortable ones!) set out only for church services. The sanctuary area is normally curtained off when not in use. The building is regularly used by members of all the religious faiths represented in this culturally mixed area.

The stage is at the other end of the main hall. In the picture it shows the cross made for the first "Genesis" service, an all age service held each month at St Francis church. Everyone made a person with their name on it, and at a later service we decorated crosses. The building provides us with a bright and cheerful atmosphere in which to encourage children and adults to spend time with God.

A detail from the altar frontal, which is a St Francis cross made for us by the nuns at Clewer Abbey. It reminds us that the church is dedicated to St Francis of Assisi, whose dedication to God inspired a whole generation of younger Christians to follow his Way and founded the Franciscan order.
